How to calculate cost per mile

Add every cost for a trip — fuel (gallons × price per gallon), driver pay, tolls, and your fixed overhead (insurance, truck payment, maintenance reserve) — then divide the total by miles driven. The result is your cost per mile (CPM). Any load rate above your CPM is profit.

What's a good cost per mile?

Most owner-operators run between $1.60 and $2.00 all-in per mile. Fleets running newer, financed trucks tend to sit higher. Knowing your real CPM is the difference between a profitable load and a losing one.
